Our review process is built around one principle: give dog owners the most accurate, useful information possible — regardless of which products pay the highest commissions.
In detail
Before researching products, we define the specific needs of different dog types for that category. For example, "best orthopedic dog bed" requires different criteria for a 120lb Great Dane than for a 12lb Chihuahua. We map criteria to breed size, energy level, coat type, and known health risks before we look at a single product.
We start with a broad market scan, not a shortlist from a press release. This means looking at products across price points, from established brands and newer entrants. We check manufacturer claims against third-party testing data where available.
We systematically analyse verified purchase reviews — not star ratings, which are easy to game. We look for recurring patterns: what breaks, what wears faster than expected, what consistently delights buyers 6 months post-purchase. Outlier negative reviews are separated from systematic quality issues.
Each product is scored against criteria weighted for the specific breed profile: size match, energy level suitability, coat type compatibility, and relevant health factors. A product that's a 9/10 for a Border Collie might be a 6/10 for a Basset Hound. Our recommendations reflect this.
Dog food, supplements, flea & tick prevention, and dental care are evaluated against current veterinary nutritional guidelines and, where applicable, peer-reviewed research. We flag products under active FDA investigation (e.g. grain-free food and DCM) and note when scientific consensus is still developing.
Every review includes a "cons" section. If a product has a real weakness — durability issues, smell complaints, difficulty with the clasp — we include it. Our goal is to give you information, not to sell you something. A well-informed buyer who chooses a slightly lower-ranked product because it fits their dog better is a success for us.
A formula change, a manufacturing issue, or a better alternative entering the market all trigger a review update. We timestamp our last review date on all guides. If something we recommended has a documented problem, we update the recommendation.
Scoring
Our product scores (1–10) are weighted composites of the following factors. Weights vary by product category.
| Factor | What we evaluate | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Verified buyer satisfaction | Pattern analysis of verified purchase reviews — not average star rating | 30% |
| Ingredient / material quality | Raw material sourcing, manufacturing standards, certifications | 25% |
| Breed-size match | How well the product fits the specific breed profile | 20% |
| Value for money | Price relative to comparable alternatives at the same quality tier | 15% |
| Brand track record | Company history, recall history, transparency, customer service | 10% |
Accept payment from brands in exchange for placement in our recommendations
Promote products based on affiliate commission rate rather than quality
Publish sponsored reviews without clear labelling (we currently have none)
Use average star ratings as a primary quality signal — they're too easy to manipulate
Recommend products we believe have genuine safety concerns for any dog breed
Write "cons" sections that are obviously manufactured to look balanced while being meaningless
If you've found inaccurate information, an outdated recommendation, or a product safety concern we've missed, please let us know. We take corrections seriously.
